Where is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman?

The Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szรฉpasszony-vรถlgy) is in Eger, Hungary. It is one of Hungaryโ€™s top wine regions and two hours away from Budapest. Because of its proximity to Budapest, visiting Eger can be done while vacationing in Hungaryโ€™s capital.

What is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman?

The Valley of the Beautiful Woman is a small wine region that boasts 48 wine cellars.

The cellars are numbered and positioned next to one another along an oval-shaped street. The wine cellars are family-owned and range from traditional cave cellars to fancy more modern cellars.

We chose to walk around, but there is a train that will move you around the valley.

Why should you visit the Eger wine region?

The Valley of the Beautiful Woman is a unique destination because it has so many wineries in such a small area. That means you can go on a wine crawl and visit a lot of cellars in one day.

Because there were 48 wineries, we had to choose a few to visit. In this guide, we discuss two of our favorite cellars.

What wine cellars should you visit in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman?

Biro & Fia Pincรฉszet (Biro & Son Winery)

Wine Cellar #2

Cellar number two was the first cellar we visited, and it was by far our favorite. We went back three times during our day trip. If you only have time for one wine cellar, we highly recommend visiting Biro & Fia.

Teresa, the host at cellar number two, eagerly greeted us at the door and welcomed us to her familyโ€™s wine cellar. After walking down some stairs, we were in a cave. We noticed the temperature drop and were charmed by the traditional decorations.

Teresa poured us a glass of the famous Egri Bikavรฉr. This red wine is also known as Bullโ€™s Blood wine.

Eger Travel Guide Egri Bikavรฉr

Legend has it that Egri Bikavรฉr got its name during a battle between the Turks and the people of Eger.

The soldiers in Eger were given red wine with a meal, and word spread to the Turks that the wine had bullโ€™s blood in it. The Turks were intimidated because they believed the wine gave the Eger soldiers an edge. The Eger soldiers ended up winning that particular battle.

In addition to exceptional bullโ€™s blood wine, Teresa also told us about the other wines from her family's cellar, and she showed us the guest book with people from all over the world trying the wine.

She had such a warm, energetic personality that we decided to visit her a few more times during the day.

A glass of Egri Bikavรฉr from cellar #2 is 500 HUF ($1.31).

Make sure to have cash because some cellars do not accept cards.

Hagymรกsi Pince (Onion Cellar)

Wine Cellar #19

Another one of our top recommendations while exploring the Valley of the Beautiful Woman is to visit cellar number nineteen.

Hagymรกsi was by far the largest cellar we visited. There were multiple seating areas to enjoy the wine.

The wine cellar has two floors that you can explore. On the second floor, you will find a small museum-like area with old wine-making tools.

If you are short on time, wine cellar number nineteen is another recommendation for must-visit cellars in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman.

What are the food options at the Valley of the Beautiful Woman?

Piknik ร‰tterem (Picnic Restaurant)

After visiting a few wineries, you will most likely be ready for lunch or dinner. There is an entire area of restaurants in the valley, so there are plenty of options for lunch.

We chose to eat lunch at Piknik ร‰tterem.

For lunch, we got breaded chicken stuffed with ham and cheese; and regular breaded chicken with fries.

Lunch for two was around 7,500 HUF ($20).
